When I travel I sometimes find it hard to meet people and end up feeling a bit lonely. That’s why I started to use NomadHer, an app that aims at connecting women solo traveling around the world.

Free and Safe

The app is free and you need to verify your identity to keep the community safe and womanly.

The founder and CEO Hyojeong, who traveled to many countries says in regard of safety while solo traveling: “It is true. There are moments when I did not feel comfortable: Being followed by a drunk guy at 3 am in the train station when there is no one, or going through terrible moments by a male couch-surfing host even though he had over 20 comments from previous guests. However, the reason I continued solo traveling is that it allowed me to be who I am. Solo traveling allowed me to know “What I can” and “What I cannot.” It allowed me to realize that I am pretty good at dealing from A to Z by myself. […] Whenever I go on a new solo journey, I feel confident and brave.”

Unfortunately, we all have been through situations where a man made us feel unsafe or even got assaulted. It happens abroad or in our home country, but there is ways to keep yourself safer. And I do believe, like Hyojeong, that it should not deter you from traveling. It should however make you aware of your own limits.

An amazing opportunity to make new and interesting friends from all over the world.

During my 2023 trip to Seoul, I met many friends like Carol and Maria with whom I went on a day out in Itaewon to eat delicious Korean fried chicken.

A few days later, I posted a message asking if anybody wanted to learn how to make kimchi. That’s how I met Julie, a fellow French traveler. And we had a very good time learning how to make Kimchi and eating Kimchi Pancake at Seoul Kimchi Academy.

It was so interesting to see how they ended up in South Korea and what was their experience of the country. We still talk every once in a while to see who is where and I wouldn’t have met any of them without NomadHer.

Inclusivity

When asked about inclusivity, the CEO says:

“We are open to all women who wish to discover & take an adventure around the world. Still, the reason that we verify the gender on the Identity card, to make sure that it is still “Female” is I wanted to build a safe community where female travelers support each other. […] I personally believe, that sometimes being most exclusive can be another way to be most inclusive, as we often got heard why we do not open the platform for “all gender.” So whether they are transgender, queer, etc if their ID card says “female” we accept all female travelers.”

Although the lack of inclusivity for women who haven’t yet or cannot legally transition bothers me, I also understand. The assurance of a 100% female crowd actually made me choose this app over another one open to everyone.

Overall I really recommend NomadHer. Even if you are not traveling alone, it’s still a super nice way to meet travelers and you can make beautiful memories together.

Tell me in the comment how you met some of your travel friends!
